The January seasonal fire climate outlooks are now available. These describe how fire danger conditions are tracking in different parts of the country as we transition through summer.
Reports are available for both the North and South Islands. Graphs are also available for each region tracking seasonal fire dangers (DC, BUI and CDSR) for individual weather station locations.
The non-traditional La Nina event and recent heavy rainfalls are making it difficult to predict fire danger conditions across the country. However, dry conditions remain in some regions, and areas of the country to watch over the coming few months include Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay and the Wairarapa in the North Island, and Nelson, Marlborough and Canterbury (North, Central and the southern lakes), and also potentially Otago (Queenstown Lakes and Central) and parts of Southland (Tuatapere & Stewart Island) in the South Island.
