Fire research team in the media

Members of the Scion fire research team have been active in the media in recent weeks.

The Pukaki and Ohau wildfires created significant interest, with articles featuring on Stuff, and in the NZ Herald, Otago Daily Times and ODT’s Star News. Grant Pearce also featured in stories on Radio NZ’s The Panel and The Detail, and TVNZ’s 1News.

The Ohau and earlier Pukaki wildfires also brought discussion of New Zealand’s fire risk to the fore, with several articles in the NZ Herald on how current La Nina and future climatic conditions could affect wildfire risk.

Social fire research underway at Mt Iron near Wanaka on wildfire risk awareness, preparedness and mitigation methods also appeared in local newspaper articles from the Otago Daily Times and Wanaka Sun. This followed an earlier feature on wildfire in NZ Geographic.

More recently, Tara Strand also featured, via the Science Media Centre and Newshub/TV3 (see video), talking about potential for smoke to carry infectious diseases.

All these media items are captured on the Scion Rural Fire Research webpage, where they can be accessed from the News & Events page by clicking on the Related Links – Media Items link.
