Following completion of the monthly seasonal fire danger outlooks, Scion was asked by Fire and Emergency New Zealand to produce a summary of the 2019/20 fire season.
This summary is now available in a new section of the Rural Fire Research website.
This report summarises the 2019/2020 wildfire season for New Zealand (1 October 2019 – 30 May 2020). The purpose of this document is to provide a summary of the past season, to aid discussions in each district around operational reduction and readiness measures, and opportunities for continual improvement.
Trends in the number of wildfires, area burnt, and fire causes have been identified using data from Fire and Emergency NZ’s fire incident reporting database. The report also summarises New Zealand’s fire weather and climatology information over the fire season from the Fire Weather System. The findings are broken down into national and regional/district analyses (found in the Appendices).
